The Perfect Scoop

After my husband and I made a stop for icecream one night we started critiquing it… Saying things like “good size, expensive, friendly service, fresh cones, etc”. That’s when we got the idea to go on a search for the perfect ice cream cone.  It took us a couple months, a lot of money and many road tours but we’ve got a few favourites now. We still aren’t done, there’s many more places to try but we can add those onto this post later. Since summer is in full swing we wanted to get you craving icecream and hope you can enjoy some of Ontario’s Highlands best ice cream.

Here’s the scoop ( no pun intended )

1st Place Tracey’s Ice Cream, Renfrew

First place was hard to pick. It was almost Scoops in Pakenham but what won us over for Tracey’s was the price and selection.

Icecream: Tracey’s

Price: 1/2 the price of anywhere else.

Selection: GREAT. Had all my favourite flavours and then some.

Service: Fast and Friendly

Size: Average

Seating: Tables and chairs available inside.

Side note: if you want to sit outside the swinging bridge is a short drive away and offers a nice view of the Bonnechere River.  Only downside about Tracey’s is it is cash only but if you have spare change on you it will probably cover the cost.  The icecream is also made right there, you can’t get any fresher than that!

Second PlaceSCOOP’S, Pakenham

Icecream: Nestlé, Tracey & Reid’s Dairy

Price: Average

Selection: Very good. Had all my favourites.

Service: Fast and Friendly

Size: Very good

Seating: Covered outside seating available right there

Side Note: if you want to sit by water there is a nice little park you can go to along the Mississippi River minutes away from Scoops. The waffle cones are made there and are always fresh. They have FROZEN YOGURT! This was a huge plus for my husband because he really likes fruit flavoured ice cream and it reminded him of gelato. Scoops was our favourite in terms of atmosphere. We will definitely be going back here many times this summer.

Third PlaceKNUZ, Burnstown

Icecream: Kawartha Dairy

Price: Average

Selection: Good

Service: Fast and Friendly

Size: Good – they have the biggest waffle cones I’ve ever seen. If your serving size looks small, it’s not. It’s because the cone is HUGE!

Seating: Covered seating available outside.

Side Note: I have a soft spot for supporting local businesses and this one is located minutes away from our home so obviously it’s a favourite.  The only downside is due to the lack of traffic through Burnstown (I’m guessing) they aren’t always open when you get a craving for icecream. They are in a really great location – across from the Neat Coffee Shop and if you go there on a Friday night you can catch the Farmers Market right in the parking lot where there are fresh vegetables, honey and much more for sale. The Burnstown beach is also seconds away if you want to enjoy your icecream by the Madawaska River.

The Scoop, Cobden

Icecream: Tracey’s Dairy

Price: Average

Selection: Good

Service: Fast and Friendly

Size: Average

Seating: Benches available outside

Side Note:  if I lived closer this one may have got a better grade because not only was the icecream good, but they have GELATO and CANDY! And it’s the type of candy that you can bag yourself. If you want to eat by the water there is a beautiful park located on Muskrat Lake minutes away.
Waterfall Delights, Almonte

Icecream: Reid’s Dairy

Price: Average

Selection: Limited but good

Service: Fast and Friendly

Size: Average

Seating: covered picnic tables behind

Side Note: Our beautiful daughter was born in Almonte, we love this little town. If you want to sit by the water you can walk a couple minutes or drive a few seconds to the Mississipi River.

White Lake Restaurant, White Lake

Icecream: Reid’s Dairy

Price: Good

Selection: Limited

Service: Fast and Friendly

Size: Average

Seating: inside only

Side Note: as this is not an icecream parlour we weren’t expecting a great selection but what’s neat about the White Lake restaurant is their icecream is nut free which is good to know for those with allergies and they have the BEST PIZZA EVER! No waffle cones though… Also if you want to sit by the water you can drive a minute down the road and be beside White Lake.
Pizzeria, Calabogie

Icecream: Tracey’s Dairy

Price: Average

Selection: Good

Service: Good

Size: Large

Seating: Inside

Side Note: Good pizza and minutes away from one of my favourite places – Jockos Beach/Barnett Park where you can enjoy your icecream with a view of Calabogie Lake. Want more info on what do in Calabogie? Search my blog, Calabogie has lots of activities such as hiking, climbing, kayaking, skiing, etc…

Flavour Container, Arnprior

Icecream: Kawartha Dairy

Price: Average

Selection: Average

Service: Fast and Friendly

Size: Average

Seating: Few benches nearby

Side Note: there is another icecream shop located across the road (pictured below). Out of the two this one was better we found. Better flavours and service. If you want to sit by the water you can drive down the road, past the hospital to the Ottawa River where there is a beautiful beach, park and a splash pad!
The Ice Shack, Arnprior

Icecream: Tracey’s

Price: Average

Selection: Limited

Service: okay

Size: Average

Seating: none except across the road…

Side Note: you can go to same park as I described above. Icecream was good since it is Tracey’s icecream but we had a better experience with Flavour Container.
